Just another random stop on the Internet

Good day Impulse/Stardock,

I've been trying to download Stardock Virtual Desktops, but I'm not having any luck. Impulse tells me version 2.09 beta is available. Using Impulse I start the download and I can see it's trying to download the application. It goes all the way to the end of the download and then quits and a Retry button appears. I've retried multiple times, but it keeps telling me to retry. I thought it might be my version of Impulse and uninstalled it and re-installed it using the latest impulse full setup file and I've tried the Reset Data, but neither option has worked. I previously had Stardock Virtual Desktops installed on my computer, but I recently had to rebuild my system. Where can I get a copy of Stardocks Virtual Desktops? I'm also having download problems with WindowFX and Bootskin. WindowFX tells me there's an update available and the update runs, but Impulse keeps telling me there's an update available. Bootskin (not Bootskin for Vista) won't even download. I have Build 1268 of Impulse installed. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm having a bit of an issue with it myself, however, mine is that it's not running on Vista x64

In Impulse, in the upper right is a blue ?.

Click on that and then choose "View Error log"

Scroll down to the bottom and copy and paste the last bit about Virtual Dersktops here.

I resolved the problem of getting Virtual Desktops by using the Stardock Central application. The only application I have a problem getting now is the Bootskin application.

From someone having the sme problem currently, here's what is put into the log (which was emptied before attempting the "Retry" option).  I find it interesting that the error was placed into the log twice.  It would appear to be an MD5 checksum problem in my case.  This has been reproducing over several work days.

Ravelkall, can you try again with any antivirus or security apps turned off to see if they are interfering with Impulse?

on Jun 30, 2009

As off as I can turn things (Disabled which pauses the service) while at work the error is still occurring.  I will try to reproduce at home in a cleaner environment after work.   FWIW, I also installed WB today with no problems which makes me less suspicious of the AV software.

on Jun 30, 2009

Additional information, hope this helps track things down.

From home, no AV, no Firewall (temp. disabled), temporarily in the DMZ (so basically nothing in the way):

Version 2.0 D/L and Install, no problems. [reports 6.5 MB, downloads 3.23MB]

Version 2.0c (Beta) - fails MD5 checksum [Reports 5.8MB, attempts 2.8MB]

Log looks the same as before:

Version 2.0c (Beta) - fails MD5 checksum

Was able to verify this internally today.  It is being addressed.  The non beta version should be fine.

I cannot update Stardock Virtual Desktops. Every time I try to install the update, I get a message saying: "Update file invalid" It seems that it downloads for just one second, and then the message appears and I'm returned to My Software section of Impulse.

From within Impulse:

-Click the Impulse Logo in the upper left
-Choose 'Preferences...'
-Click the 'Reset Data' button
-Close impulse and relaunch it. You may notice a long update time, which is normal as it is rebuilding the deleted info.

If this does not resolve the issue, I would suggest uninstalling Impulse, rebooting your PC, and then reinstalling from the latest installer build here:

I had to rebuild my boot drive and I installed Windows 7 RC (64-bit) while I await the shipment of the upgrade version that I've purchased (long wait, I know). I'm running into the same inability to install Virtual Desktops due to the same issue and I get the same error message. I tried both of Shirley's suggestions and in each case they failed to correct the installation failure.

I recognize that Windows 7 is not officially supported yet and I am running the RC but with this post I wanted to check and see if there are any other suggestions for me that I could try in order to run the beta version.

For others reading this thread who may be interested (in Win 7 RC 64-bit) I currently I have ver. 2.00 of Virtual Desktops running in Object Bar with the VistaBar theme and I've added Virtual Desktops to the theme. I can use the virtual desktop capability for the most part (pretty crashy, but I wouldn't expect stability at this point). An Object Bar shortcut on the desktop helps. Other than stability issues the one big issue that I've run into is that the individual window wallpapers that I've set do not change when changing desktops. FWIW, I'm also able to run Object Dock Plus just fine after changing the Memory/Speed Optimization to "Optimize for performance." "Optimize for memory" didn't work as I got erratic screen drawing of Object Dock Plus and corruption of the desktop.
